Lake Scented Candles

Lake Candles With A Purpose

It’s officially spring and heading to your favorite lake is sounding like a seriously good idea. We are right there with you! As candlemakers, we are always looking for aromatic inspirations and ways to bring our olfactory experiences into your home…or in this case, your lake home!

But that’s not all. The idea behind our Lake Candle series means much more. Our “Let’s Get Lake-ed” line is intended to direct focus to the effects of “body shaming” and “slut shaming” on people of all shapes, sizes, genders, sexual identity, lifestyle choices, and all forms of oppression that affect the multiple, intersectional identities held by members of our community.

Our lake candles depict a graphic of the lakes shape, the lake name and the phrase, “Let’s Get Lake-ed.”

So what the heck does that mean and how does it relate to shaming?

Let’s Get Lake-ed

What is Body Shaming & Slut Shaming?

The meaning behind our “Let’s Get Lake-ed” candle line is to celebrate girls, boys, women, men, young, and old of all shapes and sizes and support the fight against of body shaming. Body shaming is nothing new.

Body shaming, as defined by Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer in the Los Angeles Times in 2020:

“Body shaming is humiliating, with often painful, long-term consequences,” he said. “It mocks and stigmatizes its victims, tearing down self-respect and perpetuating the harmful idea that our unique physical appearances should be compared to air-brushed notions of ‘perfect.’ What really matters is our character and humanity. While body shaming, in itself, is not a crime, there are circumstances in which invading one’s privacy to accomplish it can be. And we shouldn’t tolerate that.”

Body shaming also holds a strong position in my 17 year old daughters mind, specifically “slut shaming.” If you aren’t familiar with the phrase “slut shaming,” Very Well Family (verywellfamily.com) defines it better than I could ever attempt to try.

“Slut-shaming is a form of cyberbullying where girls are targeted on social media and bullied through degradation or humiliation for their sexuality. What this means is that girls are often ridiculed for the way they look, the way they dress and their presumed level of sexual activity…”

You can learn more about the types slut shaming and the effects of slut shaming here.

To further the fight against body shaming & slut shaming, we will be donating 50% of all “Let’s Get Lake-ed” lake candle sales to No Means No Worldwide.

When Shaming Turns To …

One frightening component of slut shaming is when words turn into actions. For example, you are at a college party. You are wearing a form fitting short dress. There is a lot of alcohol involved. You head to the bathroom for a potty break. You close the door. Next thing you know, someone has broken into the bathroom. It is that guy who has been hitting on you all night. You tell him to leave. He doesn’t. You ask him to get away from you. He doesn’t. You ask him to stop touching you. He doesn’t. You tell him “no” multiple times. Your pleas fall on deaf ears. You are raped. As he’s leaving, he tells you that you were “asking for it” when you put on that dress.

When “No Means No” Falls on Deaf Ears

We’ve all heard the phrase “no means no” but if you have been living on another planet since forever, here is a brief synopsis.

“No Means No Worldwide (NMNW) is a global rape prevention organization whose mission is to end sexual violence against women and children. We train instructors in high-risk environments to deliver our proven IMpower rape prevention curricula to boys and girls ages 10-20. Our research shows an average 50% decrease in the incidence of sexual assault for girls taught IMpower. Girls learn to identify risk, say “no” and talk their way out of trouble. If that “no” is not respected, they also learn physical skills to back it up. Boys learn to challenge rape myths, ask for consent and intervene if they anticipate or witness predatory behavior.”

When Words Don’t Work

During discussions with my daughter, we talked about what happens when “no means no” falls on deaf ears.

What then?

Sometimes you just have to turn words into action.

Fact: Nearly one in five women in the US has been raped at some point during her lifetime.

Fact: Any form of resistance significantly reduces the likelihood of a perpetrator completing a rape — 87% on average by one calculation.

Conclusion: When words don’t work, it’s time to take action.

It’s Time for Action

Sometimes words alone just do not work. Words mean nothing to someone who just doesn’t care. When words don’t work, it’s time for action. We need to learn how to protect ourselves. Period. Yes, we also need to “teach our boys” how to respect women but in the interim, self defense is mandatory. Predators need to know that “words” are not our only line of defense. They need to become very aware of our power and knowledge.

Every female, of every age, NEEDS to take a series of self-defense classes. Not sure how? Search Google for “Self Defense Classes Near Me.”Not just one but a series. We need to learn how to use our keys as a line of defense. Heck, we need to know how to handle a pocket knife. We need to carry pepper spray. We need to pick-up a pack of self-defense screamers and give a couple to our friends. We need to not talk about it, we need to do it.

How Can I Help?

To further the fight against body shaming & slut shaming, we will be donating 50% of all “Let’s Get Lake-ed” lake candle sales to No Means No Worldwide. So all you have to do is buy a lake candle! You will also have the opportunity to add your name to our list of No Means No Worldwide support list after you purchase your candle.

Best Long-Lasting Room Spray

Editing Your Beacon Mode

New For 2019-2020: The Best Room Spray That Triples As A Body + Linen Spray

Double Black Oud Masculine Room Spray
Double-Black. Bright Bergamot, Valencia Orange, Mint Leaves, Clove Spice, Star Jasmine, Amber Tonka, Black Sandalwood, and Oud Wood.

There is nothing like a smell to stir old memories…places we’ve been, lost loves, visits to grandparents house over the holidays, long & lazy days at the beach or the sweet smell of freshly turned soil after a summer rainstorm.

Every one of our Signature Scents has been designed to tickle that scent memory and take you on a sniff-riffic journey through the olfactory world.

Our Signature Scents started as a candle collection. Craft beer festival venues have always been our preference for pop-ups and sales. The idea for our Signature Scent Room + Body Sprays started at one of these festivals. There wasn’t one festival that passed where someone asked us if we had our scents in a lotion, beard oil, or perfume/cologne. In the earlier years, I was still perfecting my candle line but the thought of a matching bath & body line for my Signature Scents was never far from my mind.

It took me a few months to decide what I wanted to start with for the new bath & body line but I always seemed to go back to the idea of a room spray that doubled as a room spray. My personal experience with room & body sprays has never been all that impressive.

The Problem With Most Room Sprays & Body Sprays

They’re Just Not That Into You

  1. Failure to Launch. My morning routine starts with a shower. Next, I cover my body with scented body lotion or body butter (not going to name names). Then, I would spray my body, neck to toes, with the same scented body spray. I do this layering technique because it is supposed to make the scent last longer. Everything was great for about the first 30 minutes. After that, nothing. It was as if I had never applied. Not cool.
  2. Don’t be Weak. Unless I was using an Eau de Toilette body spray, it was almost guaranteed that most body sprays wouldn’t be strong enough to stick around. Why not just use my Eau de Toilette instead? Yeah right, that stuff is expensive & what I really only use for special occasions. To be fair, that is really all a body spray is intended to be.  You can educate yourself below. But really….what’s the point then???
    • Eau Fraiche (most body sprays) – The most diluted version of the fragrance, usually with one to three percent perfume oil in alcohol and water. Usually lasts for less than an hour.
    • Toilette (Eau de Toilette) – A light spray composition with five to 15 percent pure perfume essence dissolved in alcohol. This variety usually lasts for about three hours.
    • Perfume (Eau de Parfum) – Historically genderless, used to describe both men’s and women’s fragrances. The best term used to describe a fragrance. Contains 15 – 20 percent pure perfume essence and lasts for about five to eight hours.
    • Perfume – A corruption of the Latin phrase per fumum (through smoke). The most concentrated and expensive of all fragrance options. Slightly oilier, perfume, or parfum, is composed of 20 to 30 percent pure perfume essence. A single application of perfume can last up to 24 hours.
  3. Not Flexible. When I run out of room spray, I either grab my husband’s Axe or one of my many body sprays. “Why doesn’t she just use one of her candles?” Candles are great but not optimal for immediate smell squashing and you know what I’m talking about. It’s the smell left behind after cooking fish, it’s “who didn’t empty the trash?” funk, it’s also the forgot to flush bathroom UGHHHHH, and finally – the surprise important guest visit quick, “OMG, I wish my house always smelled this good!” spray!

The Perfect Custom Real Estate Closing Gift

The “Welcome Home” Candle

Unique Realtor Closing Gift Idea

They walk into the kitchen to discover the beautiful custom candle you have left for them to enjoy! In larger letters, on one side of the candle, they see the words “Welcome Home” or whatever message you choose to display. In smaller letters underneath is the name of the candle, “New Home Scent.” On the other side is your name, contact info, and maybe a small personal message.

Your customer realtor closing candle gift is a success. It is subtle, smells great, and isn’t super sales-y!

The Power of Smell

What Makes a Custom Candle the Best Real Estate Closing Gift?

First American Home Warranty says this about the power of smells,

Incoming smells are first processed by the olfactory bulb, which starts inside the nose and runs along the bottom of the brain. The olfactory bulb has direct connections to two brain areas that are strongly implicated in emotion and memory:  the amygdala and hippocampus. Interestingly, visual, auditory (sound), and tactile (touch) information do not pass through these brain areas. This may be why olfaction, more than any other sense, is so successful at triggering emotions and memories.

How Does It Work?

It’s Super Easy To Get Your Very Own Custom Realtor Closing Gift Candle.

Propolis For Skin & Top 5 Reasons To Add It To your Skincare Routine

Propolis For Skincare

Propolis has been used in Europe for many years and is just now catching on in America. In this article, we will be covering the benefits of using Propolis for skincare.

What is Propolis?

The worker bees make Propolis from tree resins that they collect from leaf buds and tree sap. They collect the resins and carry them back to the hive on their legs in their pollen baskets.  The bees then mix the collected resins with wax, honey, and enzymes from their stomachs (bee spit) to turn it into Propolis.

Bee enzymes contain 13-glicosidase enzyme found in their saliva. More than 300 different compounds have been identified so far in propolis, including

  • Aliphatic acids
  • Esters
  • Aromatic acids
  • Fatty acids
  • Flavonoids
  • Carbohydrates
  • Aldehydes
  • Amino Acid
  • Ketones
  • Chalcones
  • Dihydrochal
  • Terpenoids
  • Vitamins
  • Inorganic substances

The end composition is 50% resins, 30% waxes, 10% essential oils, 5% pollen and 5% plant debris. Wow!

Diagram of How is Propolis Made?
The Propolis Process.

Propolis Fun Fact:

In South Africa, during the Anglo-Boer War, more than
90 years ago, it was used with vaseline for ointment preparation to heal war wounds.
This helped save the lives of many soldiers, since antibiotics were not yet available.

5 Reasons To Add Propolis To your Skincare Routine

Ancient Depiction of an Egyptian Beekeeper

Humans have been using propolis since ancient times, from at least 300 BC, and there are records suggesting that propolis has been used as a medicine in many parts of the world, both internally and externally. In general, propolis contains phenol acids, flavonoid, terpenes, aromatic aldehydes and alcohols, fatty acids, stilbenes, β-steroids, and various other substances

In other words, Propolis is jam-packed full of good stuff  that can help revitalize our skin at a cellular level, including:

  1. It’s helpful in the anti-aging process. Propolis may reduce the appearance of wrinkles and smooth out skin, Propolis may also help skin retain more moisture to maintain a healthier, more vibrant complexion. Much of the body’s ailments, including visible signs of aging, can be attributed to inflammation. Propolis, rich in anti-inflammatories and antioxidants, may be poised to become aging skin’s greatest ally.
  2. A true fighter of redness, acne & blemishes. Propolis can be used to treat and prevents blemishes, acne, and redness. Since it’s a naturally-occurring antiseptic, it’s a must-have for those with acne-prone skin.  It has regenerative and healing properties, making it a fantastic smoothing and softening agent.
  3. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Its anti-inflammatory properties are used mainly for muscles and articulations, and also other types of inflammations, infections, rheumatisms, and torsions. due to its large content of polyphenol compounds.
  4. Propolis has well known wound-healing properties. Propolis can help with wound healing. According to the NCBI, bee propolis has been seen to have a positive impact on the wound-healing process, in part by increasing the collagen content of tissues and promoting wound closure.
  5. Protection from free-radicals. Free radicals are oxygen molecules that damage cell function and your skin’s DNA, and they can be generated by UV exposure. While it as important as ever to wear broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, we recommend taking things a step further and pairing SPF with antioxidants to help neutralize free radical damage. When exposed to UVA and UVB rays, studies from the NCBI have found that bee propolis contributes to skin protection against free radicals.

Small-Batch Private Label Candles

Cooking Up Small Batch Candles For Small Businesses

Boutique Custom CandlesBeing a small business owner can be super rewarding but also challenging in many ways. Believe me, I know. As a small business owner myself, I am always trying to find new and unique ways to pull apart from my competition.

On top of the list of challenges is high-minimums.

For the candle maker, it’s wax, fragrances, wicks, containers, and labels. The more we buy, the cheaper the cost but for the small business owner, we face the challenge of space, money, and chance.

The Risk Of High-Minimum Private Label Candle

Custom Candle StorageSpace

If you’ve already done your research, you already know that candle minimums can be anything but minimal. Some require a  minimum of 500 candles PER SCENT. For one, where in the heck are you going to put all of those candles?  500 candles could probably fill up all of the shelf space in your inventory closet! So, that’s not going to work.

Money

Let’s say you have decided to flip the bill on 500 candles. The cost of 500 candles will probably run you anywhere between $5,000 to $7,500 for one candle scent!

Chance

Now that you have your 500 custom private-label candles in just one scent, will they sell? This is where chance comes into play. No explanation needed.

Taking A Chance

Low-Minimums

As much as “taking a chance” is one of the hardest steps to take for a small-business owner, this is what we have decided to.

We have an extensive list of fragrances for you to choose from or we can create a completely custom scent to best compliment the unique personality of your boutique, salon, barbershop, brewery, winery, distillery, or whatever!
